Construction crews have now moved to the west side of the 8 Street S.W. underpass as work continues on the enhancement project.
Most of the improvements are completed on the east side pedestrian walkway, except for the guardrails which are currently being fabricated and will be installed in the future.
With the move, the west side walkway is now closed between 8 Avenue and 10 Avenue until construction activities are completed. During construction pedestrians will need to use the east side walkway through the underpass. One southbound lane of traffic will also be closed.
Anticipated completion of this project is fall 2016.
About the project
The 8 Street S.W. Underpass Enhancement project is an outcome of two City plans: the Centre City Plan and the 8 Street S.W. Corridor Public Realm Master Plan.
This project is the first phase of the 8 Street S.W. Corridor improvements and involves the underpass located between 8 Avenue and 10 Avenue. The scope of work includes design and construction of underpass enhancements consistent with the Master Plan, such as construction of new sidewalks, concrete surfaces, LED lighting, public art, and repairs and maintenance of upper and lower retaining walls.
Crews will repaint the bridges and retaining walls in reflective white to make the area brighter, and will construct a public art installation between the two bridges. The bridges themselves will be cleaned and repainted but the steel girder structures will not change.
Transportation Infrastructure is responsible for managing this project.
- July 2015: Construction begins
- Fall 2016: Final completion
