Construction update - Dec. 13, 2016
Construction is now complete on this project and both walkways of the 8 Street S.W. underpass have been re-opened.
Thousands of Calgarians will now experience greater safety and comfort as a result of the improvements made to the underpass which included new sidewalks and guardrails, new LED lighting, maintenance and painting of retaining walls and structural beams, and installation of security cameras and call boxes for safety.
A unique digital public art installation reflects the heritage character of the underpass and includes scrolling messages on LED panels.
About the project
The 8 Street S.W. Underpass Enhancement project is an outcome of two City plans: the Centre City Plan and the 8 Street S.W. Corridor Public Realm Master Plan.
This project is the first phase of the 8 Street S.W. Corridor improvements and involves the underpass located between 8 Avenue and 10 Avenue. The scope of work includes design and construction of underpass enhancements consistent with the Master Plan, such as construction of new sidewalks, concrete surfaces, LED lighting, public art, and repairs and maintenance of upper and lower retaining walls.
July 2015: Construction began
