162 Avenue S.W. connection

The City is constructing the extension and connection of 162 Avenue S.W. within the city limits to the Southwest Ring Road (SWRR). This connection will provide for a better road network by distributing traffic more evenly and will provide an additional option for citizens travelling to and from the area. These connections will also provide easy access to the SWRR for people travelling north and south - another travel option instead of using Macleod Trail.

Public information sessions

The Province of Alberta (KGL Constructors and Alberta Transportation) is holding two public Information Sessions to update Calgarians on construction activities about the Southwest Ring Road project.

  • February 26, 6 – 9 p.m.
Cardel South Rec Centre, 333 Shaughnessy Blvd. S.E.
  • February 27, 6 – 9 p.m.
First Church of the Nazarene, 65 Richard Way S.W.

At these events, the City of Calgary will be in attendance to provide information about the various Ring Road connection projects, including the 162 Avenue S.W. Connection.

The City will also be hosting a third Information Session:

  • March 21, 6 – 9 p.m.
Southland Leisure Centre, 2000 Southland Drive S.W.

Project update

Construction on this project began in September 2017 with the remainder of  roadworks and streetlighting  being completed in  2018. This connection will remain closed until the SWRR opens to traffic in late 2021.

Access from westbound 162 Avenue to Bridlecrest Boulevard S.W. will remain open until the SWRR is completed. Once the SWRR is open to traffic, the left turn from 162 Avenue to Bridlecrest Boulevard S.W. will be permanently closed.

About the project

The 162 Avenue S.W. connection is one of four new road constructions to the future SWRR. The City is responsible for the design and construction of these projects because they are located within the city limits. This particular project involves a number of features:

  • Connects 162 Avenue S.W. directly to the SWRR.
  • Provides an additional option for citizens travelling to and from the area.
  • Provides enough space for a bus lane between the future Providence development and the South LRT stations.

After the SWRR opens and traffic settles into its new pattern, we'll be monitoring the 162 Avenue S.W. and Bridleridge Way intersection, in case further modifications are needed.

The following drawings show thedesign of the 162 Avenue S.W. connection as well as an overall view of the area and how it will integrate to the SWRR.
