Anderson Road S.W. widening

Project update - September 27, 2018

In 2018, we have focused our efforts on widening Anderson Road from 14th Street east to Elbow Drive, and from 24th Street west to the TUC Boundary. The widening of Anderson Road between 14th Street and 24th Street will take place in 2019. Below is a status update for the planned 2018 construction activities.

Anderson Road from 14th Street east to Elbow Drive
The final phase of resurfacing works at the Anderson Road / 14th Street intersection is underway. Following this phase of construction, the only scope left to complete from 14th Street east to Elbow Drive is paving, this will likely be deferred until 2019 because of the weather conditions we are experiencing this fall, however we will make all efforts to complete this work in 2018 if weather conditions allow.

Anderson Road from 24th Street west to the TUC Boundary
Poor soil conditions and unforeseen conflicts with utilities under the roadway has impacted the scheduled upgrades to the Anderson Road / 24th Street Intersection. It is unlikely that we will complete all of the planned work at this intersection in 2018. Please note, during the winter months there will not be any lane restrictions at this intersection.

Noise Barrier Construction
Installation of noise barriers on the north side of Anderson Road on either side of 24th Street S.W. is ongoing, completion of these walls is anticipated in November 2018. Construction of the noise wall on the south side of Anderson Road, east of Woodpark Boulevard will take place in 2019.

About the project

This project is one of several City-led projects to connect Calgary’s road network to the ring road and will accommodate changes to traffic volume and patterns that are expected after the opening of the Southwest Ring Road (SWRR).

The City is responsible for the design and construction of this project because it is located within city limits. It includes the following features:

  • Increasing Anderson Road from four to six lanes between the SWRR and Elbow Drive S.W. This, coupled with the higher speed limit of 80 km/hr and fewer intersections compared to other nearby east-west roads, makes it a more attractive option for people traveling through the area.
  • Adding extra turning lanes at all the intersections on Anderson Road between the SWRR and Elbow Drive S.W. will improve the flow of traffic along this route.
  • A noise study was conducted and determined that several locations along Anderson Road within the project area require noise barriers, as guided by The City's Surface Noise Policy. Information on the location and types of noise barriers are shown here.

Project timeline

The following construction activities are underway and will continue throughout 2018:

  • Construction between Elbow Drive and 14 Street; anticipated completion - 2018 (weather depending)
  • Construction between 24 Street and Transportation Utilities Corridor; anticipated completion - 2019
  • Construction between 14 Street and 24 Street; anticipated completion - 2019
  • Construction of noise barriers on the north side of Anderson Road; anticipated completion in late 2018.
  • Construction of the noise barrier on the south side of Anderson Road; anticipated completion in 2019

Anticipated final completion - end of 2019.
