Anderson Road S.W. widening

The City is widening Anderson Road S.W. to six lanes between the Southwest Ring Road (SWRR) and Elbow Drive S.W. This improvement provides for a better road network by offering an attractive road for people travelling east-west through the area between the SWRR and city destinations.

Free mulch

The trees that were removed in the project area in April were mulched and is free for the public to take. The mulch is located on the west side of 14 Street, south of Anderson Road, near an area with space for parking. Residents are asked to bring shovels and bags to collect it. Signage is posted near the site to help people find the area easily and access it safely. The mulch will be available for as long as supplies last.

Project update

Construction on the widening of Anderson Road between Elbow Drive and the SWRR is expected to begin in July 2017. On May 25, 2017, we held a public information session to update the community on the status of the project and provide more detailed information on the construction timelines, locations of proposed noise barriers and answer questions related to the project.

About the project

The City is responsible for the design and construction of this project because it is located within city limits. This project includes the following features:

  • Increasing Anderson Road from four to six lanes between the SWRR and Elbow Drive S.W., coupled with the higher speed limit and fewer intersections compared to other nearby east-west roads, makes a more attractive option for people travelling through the area.
  • Adding extra turning lanes at all the intersections on Anderson Road between the SWRR and Elbow Drive S.W. will improve the flow of traffic along this route.
  • A noise study was conducted and determined that several locations along Anderson Road within the project area require noise barriers, as guided by The City’s Surface Noise Policy. Information on the location and types of the proposed noise barriers is shown here.

The following drawings show the design of the Anderson Road widening as well as an overall view of the area and how it will integrate to the SWRR.

Project timeline

Construction on this project is expected to be complete by the end of 2019.

  • The construction schedule is weather dependent.
  • Residents may notice periodic increases in construction traffic throughout the project.
  • Periodic lane closures and speed limit reductions may occur, mainly during off-peak hours. We will communicate the timing and location of the closures, as well as any major activities or disruptions with area residents.

Calgary’s southwest ring road

This project is one of several City-led projects to connect Calgary’s road network to the ring road. To learn more about these other projects, as well as information on SWRR, including construction schedule, design and the history of the project, visit Calgary’s southwest ring road home page.
