Anderson Road S.W. widening

Project update - June 13, 2018

Closures/Detours

On June 20 The City will be implementing a significant traffic pattern change for the intersection of  Anderson Road and  24 Street S.W.  This change is required to accommodate the first phase of road resurfacing works which will take approximately a month to complete.

  •  All traffic movements are accommodated with this detour, however, the following movements will be restricted:
    • Motorists traveling northbound on 24 Street through Anderson Road should expect delays as the northbound through-movement is restricted to one lane
    • Motorists traveling northbound on 24 Street to eastbound Anderson Road should expect delays as the NB/EB ramp will be closed throughout the duration of the detour
  • Southbound movements along 24 Street will not be restricted as part of this phase of construction.
  • Pedestrian movements through this intersection are being taken care of.

About the project

This project is one of several City-led projects to connect Calgary’s road network to the ring road and will accommodate changes to traffic volume and patterns that are expected after the opening of the Southwest Ring Road (SWRR).

The City is responsible for the design and construction of this project because it is located within city limits. It includes the following features:

  • Increasing Anderson Road from four to six lanes between the SWRR and Elbow Drive S.W. This, coupled with the higher speed limit of 80 km/hr and fewer intersections compared to other nearby east-west roads, makes it a more attractive option for people traveling through the area.
  • Adding extra turning lanes at all the intersections on Anderson Road between the SWRR and Elbow Drive S.W. will improve the flow of traffic along this route.
  • A noise study was conducted and determined that several locations along Anderson Road within the project area require noise barriers, as guided by The City's Surface Noise Policy. Information on the location and types of noise barriers are shown here.

Project timeline

The following construction activities are underway and will continue throughout 2018:

  • Construction between Elbow Drive and 14 Street; anticipated completion - 2018
  • Construction between 24 Street and Transportation Utilities Corridor; anticipated completion - 2018
  • Construction between 14 Street and 24 Street; anticipated completion - 2019
  • Construction of noise barriers; anticipated completion in late 2018

Anticipated final completion - end of 2019.
