Anderson Road S.W. widening

Project update - November 28, 2018

Construction work in 2018 was focused on widening Anderson Road from 14 Street east to Elbow Drive, and from 24 Street west to the TUC Boundary.

Anderson Road from 14 Street east to Elbow Drive
Work between 14 Street and Elbow Drive is substantially complete. The top lift of paving at the 14 Street and Elbow Drive intersections is scheduled to be completed in spring 2019. Road paving will take place in 2019.

Anderson Road from 24 Street west to the TUC Boundary
Poor soil conditions and unforeseen conflicts with utilities under the roadway impacted the upgrades to the Anderson Road / 24 Street intersection. Work in this area has concluded for the 2018 construction season. There are now two through lanes and one left turn lane open in all directions, and it will remain this way until Spring 2019—no further detour changes or setups during  the winter.

The widening of Anderson Road between 14 Street and 24 Street will take place in 2019.

Noise Barrier Construction
Installation of noise barriers on the north side of Anderson Road on either side of 24 Street S.W. is ongoing. Construction of the noise wall on the south side of Anderson Road, east of Woodpark Boulevard will take place in 2019.

About the project

This project is one of several City-led projects to connect Calgary’s road network to the ring road and will accommodate changes to traffic volume and patterns that are expected after the opening of the Southwest Ring Road (SWRR).

The City is responsible for the design and construction of this project because it is located within city limits. It includes the following features:

  • Increasing Anderson Road from four to six lanes between the SWRR and Elbow Drive S.W. This, coupled with the higher speed limit of 80 km/hr and fewer intersections compared to other nearby east-west roads, makes it a more attractive option for people traveling through the area.
  • Adding extra turning lanes at all the intersections on Anderson Road between the SWRR and Elbow Drive S.W. will improve the flow of traffic along this route.
  • A noise study was conducted and determined that several locations along Anderson Road within the project area require noise barriers, as guided by The City's Surface Noise Policy. Information on the location and types of noise barriers are shown here.
