Anderson Road S.W. widening

The City is widening Anderson Road S.W. to six lanes between the Southwest Ring Road (SWRR) and Elbow Drive S.W. This improvement provides for a better road network by offering an attractive road for people travelling east-west through the area between the SWRR and city destinations.

Tree removal on Anderson Road - free mulch and firewood

The trees that were recently removed in the project area were mulched and some firewood was created and is free for the public to take. It will be available as of May 12, 2017 at noon. The mulch and firewood will be placed off of the west side of 14 Street, south of Anderson Road, near an area with space for parking. Residents are asked to bring shovels and bags to collect the mulch. Signage will be posted near to the site to help people find the area easily and access it safely. The mulch and firewood will be available for as long as supplies last.

Upcoming information session

If you would like to learn more about the Anderson Road widening project and the 90 Avenue and Southland Drive connections project, The City will be holding an information session to provide updates on these two Calgary-led ring road transportation projects.

When: Thursday, May 25, 2017
Time: 5-8 p.m.
Where: Southland Leisure Centre, Pool Viewing Area – 2000 Southland Drive S.W.

No RSVP is required. Representatives from Alberta Transportation and KGL Constructors will also be available to answer questions related to the Southwest Ring Road.

Project update

Detailed design for the widening of Anderson Road between Elbow Drive and the SWRR is currently underway. The design process will continue into early 2017, including coordination with utility groups and the Government of Alberta. We’ll continue updating the community and area as the project progresses.

About the project

The City is responsible for the design and construction of this project because it is located within city limits. This project includes the following features:

  • Increasing Anderson Road from four to six lanes between the SWRR and Elbow Drive S.W., coupled with the higher speed limit and fewer intersections compared to other nearby east-west roads, makes a more attractive option for people travelling through the area.
  • Provides a more efficient option for people travelling to and from the SWRR.
  • Adding extra turning lanes at all the intersections on Anderson Road between the SWRR and Elbow Drive S.W. will improve the flow of traffic along this route.
  • A noise study to determine if noise walls are required, as guided by The City’s Surface Noise Policy.

The following drawings show the current design of the Anderson Road widening as well as an overall view of the area and how it will integrate to the SWRR. The design will continue to evolve into 2017 and we’ll update the community and area through the design phase as it develops.

Project timeline

Starting in July 2017: Construction will begin between Elbow Drive and 14 Street.
2017/18: Construction between 24 Street and the city limits (Transportation Utility Corridor).
2018/19: Construction between 14 Street and 24 Street S.W.
Project completion: Fall 2019
