Anderson Road S.W. widening

Subscribe for email updates Email the project team

The City is widening Anderson Road S.W. to six lanes between the Southwest Ring Road (SWRR) and Elbow Drive S.W. This improvement provides for a better road network by offering an attractive road for people travelling east-west through the area between the SWRR and city destinations.

As part of the Anderson Road widening project, a site office is being located on the southeast corner of and Anderson Road and Woodpark Blvd S.W. This site office will be set up mid-September and remain in place until the fall of 2019. An information notice was recently distributed to residents who live in the area.

Project update

Construction on the widening of Anderson Road between Elbow Drive and the SWRR (South West Ring Road) will begin in August. In 2017, construction crews will be working between Elbow Drive and 14 Street S.W. and west of 24 Street S.W. to the future SWRR. Construction of the noise barriers along Anderson Road will also start this year.

Residents may notice periodic increases in construction traffic throughout the project. Periodic lane closures and speed limit reductions may occur, mainly during off-peak hours. We will communicate the timing and location of closures, as well as any major activities or disruptions with area residents.

On May 25, 2017, we held a public information session to update the community on the status of the project and provide more detailed information on the construction timelines, locations of proposed noise barriers and answer questions related to the project.

About the project

The City is responsible for the design and construction of this project because it is located within city limits. This project includes the following features:

  • Increasing Anderson Road from four to six lanes between the SWRR and Elbow Drive S.W., coupled with the higher speed limit of 80 km/hr and fewer intersections compared to other nearby east-west roads, makes a more attractive option for people travelling through the area.
  • Adding extra turning lanes at all the intersections on Anderson Road between the SWRR and Elbow Drive S.W. will improve the flow of traffic along this route.
  • A noise study was conducted and determined that several locations along Anderson Road within the project area require noise barriers, as guided by The City’s Surface Noise Policy. Information on the location and types of the proposed noise barriers are shown here.

The following drawings show the design of the Anderson Road widening as well as an overall view of the area and how it will integrate to the SWRR.
