Anderson Road S.W. widening

Subscribe for email updates Email the project team

The City is widening Anderson Road S.W. to six lanes between the Southwest Ring Road (SWRR) and Elbow Drive S.W. This improvement provides for a better road network by offering an attractive road for people travelling east-west through the area between the SWRR and city destinations.

Public Information Sessions

The Province of Alberta (KGL Constructors and Alberta Transportation) is holding two public Information Sessions to update Calgarians on construction activities about the Southwest Ring Road project.

  • February 26, 6:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. at Cardel South Rec Centre, 333 Shaughnessy Blvd. S.E.
  • February 27, 6:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. at First Church of the Nazarene, 65 Richard Way S.W.

At these events, the City of Calgary will be in attendance to provide information about the various Ring Road connection projects, including Anderson Road Widening.

The City will also be hosting a third Information Session:

  • March 21, 6:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. at Southland Leisure Centre, 2000 Southland Drive S.W.

Project update

Construction began in 2017 and will resume in 2018 on the widening of Anderson Road between Elbow Drive and 14 Street S.W. and west of 24 Street S.W. to the future SWRR.

Construction between 14 Street and 24 Street and of the noise barriers along Anderson Road will begin this year.

Residents may notice periodic increases in construction traffic throughout the project. Periodic lane closures and speed limit reductions may occur, mainly during off-peak hours.

About the project

The City is responsible for the design and construction of this project because it is located within city limits. This project includes the following features:

  • Increasing Anderson Road from four to six lanes between the SWRR and Elbow Drive S.W. This, coupled with the higher speed limit of 80 km/hr and fewer intersections compared to other nearby east-west roads, makes it a more attractive option for people travelling through the area.
  • Adding extra turning lanes at all the intersections on Anderson Road between the SWRR and Elbow Drive S.W. will improve the flow of traffic along this route.
  • A noise study was conducted and determined that several locations along Anderson Road within the project area require noise barriers, as guided by The City's Surface Noise Policy. Information on the location and types of noise barriers are shown here.

The following drawings show the design of the Anderson Road widening as well as an overall view of the area and how it will integrate to the SWRR.
