frequently asked questionsProject background

Project update – June 8, 2017

Construction has now begun on a new roadway that will connect Macleod Trail to Sheriff King Street in south Calgary.

The new 194 Avenue road will cross over the CPR tracks and Priddis Slough to provide access to communities west of the tracks, including Silverado, and future growth areas in the West Macleod region.

It includes a four-lane divided roadway with multi-use pathways on both sides, a bridge structure over the CPR tracks and future LRT tracks, a wildlife underpass over part of the Priddis Slough wetlands area, and a pedestrian underpass.

The project will include some modifications to the intersection at Macleod Trail and 194 Avenue, and to the intersection at Sheriff King Street.

The anticipated completion of this 194 Avenue connection is late 2018.

About the project

City Council has identified the West Macleod Area Structure Plan (ASP) as a priority growth area, anticipating that the area will eventually have a new population of 34,000 people.

The 194 Avenue connection is being built now to have supporting infrastructure in place ahead of new area development.

In order to prepare for the design and construction phase of an interim link, The City updated the Functional Planning Study for the Macleod Trail and 194 Avenue Connection. The project includes:

  • a four-lane divided roadway with multi-use pathways on both sides
  • a bridge structure over the CPR tracks and future LRT tracks
  • a wildlife underpass over part of the Priddis Slough wetlands area
  • a pedestrian underpass
  • some modifications to the intersection at Macleod Trail and 194 Avenue, and to the intersection at Sheriff King Street.
