17 Avenue S.E. Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project

The 17 Avenue S.E. BRT project is one of four additions to The City's primary transit network and includes construction of new bus-only travel lanes and new BRT stations.
The project has two phases.

A third and fourth phase for the 17 Avenue S.E. BRT are in our long-term plans. Phase 3 will extend the dedicated transit-only lanes west of the Blackfoot junction along 9 Avenue S.E. Phase 4 will extend east of Hubalta Road to 70 Street S.E. along 17 Avenue S.E. The study and preliminary design for Phase 4 is complete.

Phase 1 and 2 Timelines

  • Construction begins: Spring 2017
  • Construction ends: November 2018

Route and service information

The new MAX Purple service will run on designated transit lanes between Hubalta Road S.E. and 9 Avenue S.E. starting November 19, 2018.

17 Ave S.E. BRT stations

New BRT stations will be located on 17th Avenue S.E. at the following intersections:
  • 52 Street S.E.
  • 44 Street S.E.
  • 36 Street S.E.
  • 33 Street S.E.
  • 28 Street S.E.
  • 19 Street S.E.
  • 9 Avenue S.E.



There have been several budget approvals related to the BRT program, with funding coming from a number of sources including the provincial and federal governments. The table below outlines the budgets for the four BRTs as well as the budgets for work which was previously approved, and will be built as part of construction for the Southwest BRT.
This budget information was presented at the Nov. 13, 2017 Council meeting. The overall budget for the four BRT projects included in the BRT program is $340M. The City is managing the budget for all the projects to maintain the overall program budget.

City Council approved a Transportation Planning Study for 17 Avenue S.E. between Downtown and Stoney Trail East in July 2010 and a complementary land use concept for the 17 Avenue S.E. corridor.
