North Hill bicycle improvements

In 2011, The City will begin the construction of two bicycle route improvements in the North Hill area. This area comprises the communities of Capitol Hill, Mount Pleasant and Tuxedo Park. The goal of the new facilities is to:

  • increase mobility choices (2009 Calgary Transportation Plan Key Direction #5)
  • provide cyclists with a space to ride with a smooth surface and ability to maintain speed (City of Calgary Bicycle Policy).

The bicycle route improvements were coordinated with the North Hill community traffic study to ensure the two plans are complimentary to each other.

10 Street N.W. bicycle route

Complete plans are available at 10 Street key plan and sections. This route extends from Northmount Drive to 23 Avenue North and entails:

  • Road widening to accommodate a northbound bicycle lane on Cambrian Drive between Northmount Drive and Commerce Street N.W. (“Location A” in the plan).
  • Pavement markings to provide bicycle lanes in addition to the existing travel lanes and parking lanes on Cambrian Drive between Commerce Street and Rosehill Drive.
  • The conversion of two motor vehicle travel lanes to bicycle lanes and parking between Rosehill Drive and 23 Avenue North.

At 23 Avenue, the new bike lanes will connect to the 10 Street N.W. bicycle lanes to the south, providing a bicycle connection to 5 Avenue N.W..

24 and 21 Avenue N.W. bicycle route

Complete plans are available at 24 Ave and 21 Ave 2011 planned bike improvements. This route extends from 4 Street East to 15 Street West and entails:

  • Signage and bicycle stencils on 24 Avenue North between 11 Street West and Fourth Street East.
  • Signage and bicycle stencils on 23 Avenue between 11 Street and 10 Street N.W..
  • Signage and bicycle stencils on 21 Avenue between 10 Street and 15 Street N.W..
  • A pathway on the west side of 10 Street between 23 Avenue and 21 Avenue N.W..
