Calgary Cycle Plan

In October 1996, City Council approved the Calgary Cycle Plan to meet the growing demand for bike programs and facilities.

Many stakeholders worked to develop the plan, including the Calgary Pathway Advisory Council, the Elbow Valley Cycle Club, the Calgary Police Service, and several City departments.

Some of the initiatives endorsed in the plan are to:

  • Increase awareness by developing programs to promote cycling and other non motorized modes of transportation as healthy, environmentally sensitive, inexpensive alternatives to the auto.
  • Encourage bike use by continuing to produce the Pathway & Bikeway Map, the Cycling Safety Handbook, and other promotional material.
  • Improve and expand facilities by developing guidelines for providing bike racks, identifying suitable locations for on-street bikeways and routes for cyclists, and incorporating bike and pedestrian crossings on new bridges.
  • Emphasize education by promoting bike skills programs, awareness programs at schools, and driver education.
  • Plan for the future by improving and expanding the pathway & bikeway network.
  • lntegrate bike use with transit service by providing links between LRT stations and adjacent bikeways and pathways, bike parking and storage at LRT stations, and storage on buses.
