8 Street S.W. Corridor Public Realm Plan

Project update

Thank you to those who came by the information session on Jan 30 and filled out the online feedback form. Below are the display boards, which provide a summary of the project and the recommended plans for the vision of 8 Street S.W.:

The recommended concept plans reflect the feedback we received through the public engagement exercises that were held through 2013, while staying true to improving the pedestrian experience. Some highlights to expect:

  • Enhancing the pedestrian experience by improving areas such as sidewalks, street crossings and urban design
  • Finalizing the number of traffic lanes on 8 Street S.W. and their use
  • Establishing on-street parking options north of 8 Avenue S.W.
  • Confirming how to accommodate for bicycles between 8 Avenue S.W. and 17 Avenue S.W.

Project scope

The City of Calgary is developing a public realm master plan for 8 Street S.W. between the Bow River and 17 Avenue. The goal of this plan is to create a strong vision for the corridor that enhances the pedestrian experience by focusing on improving areas such as sidewalks, street crossings and urban design. It will be the foundation for growing 8 Street S.W. as a liveable, caring and thriving place.

At the pedestrian level, the plan will reinforce, define and connect places along the corridor. It will find balance with all modes of movement including cycling, public transit, road design and on-street parking. It will also consider existing at-grade businesses on 8 Street S.W., while including elements of social harmony that support future property developments.

Supported and guided by the Council-approved Centre City Plan (2007) and the Centre City Mobility Plan (2010), this Study will unveil how to establish a strong connection to the Bow River waterfront and enhance the corridor through to the 17 Avenue S.W. uptown area.

Public engagement

Phase 1: Pre-consultation (September to November 2012)

An open house was held on March 20, which provided Calgarians an opportunity to review the DRAFT concept designs for improving 8 Street S.W.:

What we heard

A meeting was hosted (November 19) with key stakeholders to gather baseline information, document issues and concerns, and learn from stakeholders’ experience.

Phase 2: Visioning (November to December 2012)

What we heard

A visioning session was hosted (November 26) with key internal and external stakeholders to create vision statements and guiding principles for the future 8 Street S.W. Corridor.

Phase 3: Preliminary design concepts (January 2013)

A meeting was held to gather information from key internal and external stakeholders about the preliminary design concepts, prior to the open house in March 2013.

Phase 4: Preliminary design concepts (March 2013)

An open house was held on March 20, which provided Calgarians an opportunity to review the DRAFT concept designs for improving 8 Street S.W.:

Here is what we heard from people who attended the open house.

Phase 5: Recommended plan (fall 2013 - winter 2014)

On January 30, we hosted an information session that displayed the recommended concepts for the 8 Street S.W. Master Plan. The information also identified adjacent City properties that may be redeveloped in the future.

Here is what we heard from people who attended the information session.

8 Street S.W. underpass

With the deteriorating condition of the 8 Street S.W. underpass, which has the highest pedestrian use of the existing eight downtown underpasses, the area between 8 Avenue and 10 Avenue was identified as the first priority capital project to initiate in 2014, as part of the Master Plan vision. Work on this phase will include one-on-one meetings with landowners adjacent to the area to ensure the design accommodates future developments for these properties.
