Sunmills Drive S.E. traffic opinion survey

In 2012, the Mid-Sun Community Association’s application for a community traffic study was selected for review. Submitted through the community traffic study process, the application raised concerns about motorists speed and pedestrian safety along Sunmills Drive S.E.

In May 2013, The City invited Sundance residents to complete an opinion survey on a proposed traffic management plan developed in consultation with the Mid-Sun Community Association. An information session was also held on May 24 to share the plan with the Community. The plan addresses two traffic issues along Sunmills Drive S.E.:

  • Motorist speed.
  • Safety for pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists.

Results of traffic calming opinion survey

Typically, support from two-thirds of respondents is required before any traffic management plan is considered to be endorsed by a community. Close to 110 households in the Sundance Community responded to the survey. About 80 per cent of respondents, and the area Councillor, supported the proposed plan.

Comments from the survey ranged from residents who felt there are no traffic concerns in the area, to residents who felt the area warrants a traffic management plan including traffic calming measures.

Incorporating what we heard

The proposed traffic management plan was modified based on community feedback. Many survey respondents felt that the plan did not account for pedestrian safety between Locations 2 and 3 outlined on the proposed traffic management plan.

As a result, curb extensions will be installed on the N.E. and S.E. corners of Sunmills Drive and Sunwood Way S.E. During consultation with the community association’s traffic committee and residents, this was identified as another key area of pedestrian safety concern as many children use this crossing to access their school.

On-street bike lanes along Sunmills Drive from Sunbank Road to Sunlake Road S.E.

As a part of the traffic study, The City also consulted residents in Sundance about bicycle route improvements and is implementing a pilot project of bike lanes along Sunmills Drive from Sunbank Road to Sunlake Road S.E.

On-street bike lanes are marked by a solid white line and a cycling icon. Vehicles are not permitted in this space. The additional bike lanes will narrow driving lanes widths but will not impact on-street parking.

Bike lanes have been piloted in other traffic calming projects in the City and data shows that there has been a significant reduction in speeding vehicles in the study area.

Traffic calming implementation schedule

The City is planning to start installation of these traffic measures in June of 2014.
