Construction and demolition waste

Construction and demolition waste makes up about 25 per cent of the material going to landfills. There are two ways The City is helping to reduce that amount and divert more materials to recycling.

Designated Materials Rate

This rate encourages diversion of specific materials originating from construction, demolition and renovation activities which are recyclable and have established markets. This rate is available at all Calgary landfills - view the designated materials rate.

Please note: The designated materials rate applies to commercial customers only.  If mixed or separated load contains the following material, the rate will apply.

  • Concrete
  • Brick and masonry block
  • Asphalt and asphalt shingles
  • Metals

Construction and Demolition Waste Diversion Pilot

Waste & Recycling Services has established a Construction and Demolition Waste Diversion Pilot at Spyhill Landfill to provide a recycling option in the northwest for specific materials from construction, demolition and renovation activities.

The construction and demolition waste rate is $65 per tonne for clean, separated loads of these specific materials at the Spyhill site only:

  • Wood (except treated wood)*
  • Drywall
  • Asphalt shingles
  • Cardboard

*Wood may contain nails. No pressure treated wood, plywood, particle board, medium fibreboard (MDF), oriented strand board (OSB) or garbage will be accepted.

Wood containing nails is still acceptable. The wood and shingles will be ground up for use in onsite erosion and sediment control. The drywall will be processed by a local recycler and the cardboard will be recycled and turned into other paper products.
