Clean fill guidelines

Commercial customers can bring clean fill to a Calgary landfill for disposal. Commercial vehicles are required to obtain a clean fill approval number at least 24 hours before arriving at the landfill.

Call 403-268-8440 or email cleanfill@calgary.ca to obtain an approval number. Your approval number will be valid for 7 days for a specified volume of clean fill.

Once you have received an approval number, contact 311 to confirm which landfill locations are accepting clean fill for the day.

Please note the following:

  • Commercial vehicle loads will be weighed at the landfill.
  • No vehicles larger than a tandem axle truck are allowed.
  • No trailers of any kind are allowed.
  • The minimum charge of $20/load will apply.

Clean fill guidelines for residential customers

If you are a residential customer with clean fill, see how to dispose of clean fill.

What is included in clean fill?

Acceptable Not acceptable
  • Dirt
  • Clay
  • Gravel (less than six inches in size)

Clean fill cannot contain any debris

  • No sod and grass
  • No wood, branches and twigs
  • No large rocks
  • No garbage
  • No construction materials etc.

Mixed loads containing any unacceptable material is NOT considered clean fill and will be charged the basic sanitary waste rate at a City landfill.

If other items are mixed in with the clean fill, it is the landfill's discretion as to what rate will be charged.

Clean fill after rain

Due to muddy conditions, clean fill is not accepted immediately after a rainfall. Typically it takes one to two days without rain for the landfills to dry-out after a rain event. Contact 311 to determine if the landfills are accepting clean fill after a rain event.

Soil analysis requirements

Generally any type of commercial business will need to have clean fill tested before disposal at a City of Calgary landfill. Complete a clean fill online service request form or contact 311 to schedule an appointment with an Environmental Technologist.

A representative sample or samples of soil, depending on the size and depths of each project are required. With larger excavations, when different material is encountered, new samples are required.
