What goes in my black cart?
Use your black bin for things that are at the end of their useful life and cannot be recycled or composted.
If you're not sure what to do with an item, check out our online recycling and disposal search tool.
How often are black carts collected?
When the Green Cart program is rolled out, black carts will be picked up once every two weeks since the majority of your garbage can be recycled or composted. View your collection schedule.
How do I use my black cart?
Please set our your cart by 7 a.m. on your collection day. See how to place your cart.
Your cart can hold up to four regular-sized garbage bags. If your cart is full, you can set extra bags one foot to the side of your cart for collection. For more details, please visit preparing your garbage for pickup.
Who receives a black cart?
We provide black carts to single family homes up to and including four units, as long as they are not part of a multi-unit complex, such as an apartment or condominium.
Black cart size: The black cart is 110 cm high, 62 wide and 71 cm deep. It can hold 60 kg of material.
How much is the Black Cart Collection Fee?
Households with black carts are charged monthly on their utility bill (ENMAX). The Waste Management Service Charge is mandatory if your household is eligible. This charge covers the costs associated with disposing and managing residential garbage at The City's three landfills. It does not cover the cost of pick-up, which is supported by your property taxes.
Monthly rates are based on a thirty (30) day period. The billing amount is made by dividing the monthly rate by thirty (30) to come up with a daily rate, and multiplying the daily rate by the actual number of days in the billing period.
