Green Cart Pilot Communities

Pilot residents to receive new green carts

As green carts are rolled out to homes across Calgary in 2017, pilot residents in Abbeydale, Brentwood, Cougar Ridge and Southwood will also receive a new green cart, the same size as their blue cart.

The larger green cart ensures The City is delivering a consistent level of service to all customers. For residents, it means:

  • More space for yard waste.
  • Reduces the number of paper yard waste bags needed to be purchased.

It also saves money because we're more efficient when more material fits inside the cart and less collection is done by hand.

Some of the carts used in the pilot will be reused in our existing operations. The rest of the carts will be sold or recycled.

Details about how and when the carts will be exchanged will be mailed to residents in advance.

Collection days will be changing

Collection days will also be changing in Abbeydale, Cougar Ridge and Southwood to improve collection efficiency with surrounding communities.

A new collection schedule will be delivered to residents along with their new green cart. Residents can also view their collection schedule online and sign up to receive free automated reminders or download our Garbage Day app for iPhone or Android devices.

Thank you for your participation in the pilot

The pilot demonstrated that the Green Cart program is effective in keeping food and yard waste out of the landfill.

Since launching the pilot in March 2012, we've collected more than 10 million kilograms of food and yard waste from our pilot communities and their garbage has reduced nearly half in half compared to other communities without Green Cart service.

Instead of going to the landfill and generating greenhouse gases, your food and yard material was transformed into nutrient-rich compost.
