This year's Christmas Tree Recycling program is now closed.
Thank you to everyone who dropped off their trees at one of our drop-off locations, helping The City save money while keeping trees out of the landfill.
This year's program was drop-off only. Trees were not collected door-to-door.
If you were not able to bring your tree to a drop-off location before the program closed, do not leave your Christmas tree in the back alley as they will not be collected. Instead, please dispose of your tree by:
1) Put your Christmas tree in your black cart
Cut your tree into smaller pieces and place in your black cart with the lid completely closed. Trees placed in black carts will not be mulched, they will be disposed of in the landfill.
2) Take your Christmas tree to a City landfill free of charge
Residents may continue to drop off their Christmas tree at all three landfill locations free of charge:
- East Calgary Landfill* - 17 Avenue and 68 Street S.E.
- Shepard Landfill* - 114 Avenue and 68 Street S.E.
- Spyhill Landfill* - 69 Street and 112 Avenue N.W.
The trees brought to a City landfill will be put aside for mulching.
*Please note: Only Christmas trees will be accepted for free at City landfills. If you bring other garbage with you, you will be charged the basic sanitary rate. As of Jan. 9, our landfill schedule has changed. Please check our landfill hours and locations page to confirm what days each site will be open.
Preparing your Christmas tree:
- Remove all lights, ornaments, tinsel, string, garland and tree stands
- What Do not bag or wrap your tree (including reccyling tree bags)
What happens to the trees collected during the Christmas Tree Recycling Program.
All trees collected through the program will be mulched. By recycling trees into mulch, you can keep waste out of our landfills and reduce harmful greenhouse gas emissions.
Mulch is available to residents for free at the East Calgary landfill while quantities last.
Can I put my tree in my Blue Cart?
Christmas trees are not recyclable through the Blue Cart program. Do not place your real (or artificial) tree in your blue cart. For more information on what is acceptable in your blue cart, please visit accepted blue cart recyclables.
Can I put my tree in my Green Cart (pilot communities only)?
If you have a green cart, Christmas trees (trunks less than 6" in diameter) are accepted. Please cut the tree into smaller pieces, place inside your green cart and ensure the lid can close all the way. Extra branches that don't fit inside the cart can be put in paper yard waste bags or bundled together (1.25 metre bundles) with natural fibre string.
