Fall yard waste cleanup options

Cleaning up your yard is easier than ever this fall with your green cart.

  • Always fill your green cart first. Yard waste can be put loose inside the cart.
  • Fill up paper yard waste bags if your green cart is full. Roll yard waste bags closed.
  • Yard waste in plastic bags set out with the green cart will not be picked up.
  • Extra branches can also be tied in bundles with natural fibre string (e.g. cotton, twine, jute).
  • Branches must be less than 15 cm (six inches) in diameter and 1.25 m (four feet) in length.
  • Place extra bags and bundled branches at least 30 cm (1 foot) to the side of your green cart for collection.

Please note that the Leaf & Pumpkin composting program has ended. There will be no community drop-offs for yard waste.

See more tips for collecting yard waste in your green cart.

Yard waste bag placement

Make sure there is enough room around your carts on collection day. Place extra yard waste bags at least 1 foot (30 cm) to the side of your cart.

During the busy fall season, we will collect material in green carts, but may limit the number of extra paper yard waste bags that are picked up to ensure everyone gets service. If some of your extra bags are not picked up, please store them on your property until next week's collection.

The City of Calgary's Fall Yard Waste program is now closed. Residents can continue to bring yard waste if they choose to. Landfill fees will apply.

Yard waste

What yard waste can you bring to a City landfill?

  • Make sure your load only contains yard waste like leaves, branches, plants and grass clippings.
  • Do not bring sod or food waste - it can't be composted in this program.
  • Plant roots should be free of soil.

Please note: if your load contains sod, food waste or other garbage, you will be charged the basic sanitary rate instead of the yard waste rate.

How to prepare your yard waste

Put yard waste in paper yard waste bags or left loose. If you use plastic bags, you will be asked to empty them at the composting pad at the landfill. Please cover and secure loads of loose yard waste before transporting.

What is the cost?

Regular landfill fees are in effect at this time.

Why isn't sod or food waste accepted at City landfills?

The yard waste material is taken directly to the outdoor composting pads at City landfills and is not able to process this material. You can put sod or food waste into your green cart (material from the green cart program goes to the indoor organics facility). See more about what happens to outdoor composted materials.

Can yard waste be put out with my green cart?

Yes, fill up your green cart first and put extra yard waste into paper yard waste bags.

Extra branches can also be tied in bundles with natural fibre string (e.g. cotton, twine, jute). Branches must be less than 15 cm (six inches) in diameter and 1.25 m (four feet) in length.
