In the pilot communities of Abbeydale, Brentwood, Cougar Ridge and Southwood:
- Green carts (food and yard waste) are collected weekly.
- Blue carts (recycling) are collected weekly.
- Black carts (garbage) are collected every second week.
Green cart service continues this spring
This spring Administration will bring recommendations to Council on a city-wide program. Once Council provides direction, we will update pilot residents about their collection service. Until that time, green cart collection will continue in the pilot communities at least until the end of July.

Every second week garbage collection is worth testing
Putting all of your food and yard waste into your green bin will allow you to cut your garbage in half. Since there will be less material to place in your black cart, we are testing the collection of black carts once every two weeks. With food and yard waste moving to the green cart, it will be important to collect these carts every week. This allows collection to be more efficient, which saves money.
Also, since all of your food waste can go in to the green cart and it is picked up every week, your garbage will not contain items that rot and creates the majority of issues with odours.

Tips for every second week garbage collection
- Tightly fasten bagged waste including diapers, pet waste and litter.
- Keep the lid of your black cart closed.
- Store your black cart out of direct sunlight.
- Sprinkle baking soda in your black cart to reduce odours.
