Dispose of it safely
Household cleaning chemicals like bleach, oven cleaner, glass cleaner, ammonia, spot removers, disinfectants and any others with a hazard symbol must be disposed of safely so they do not create an environmental or safety hazard. Never flush cleaning chemicals down your toilet, sink or drain as it may be harmful to the environment and may damage the pipes in your home.
You can take up to 20 litres of household chemicals per week, free of charge, to any of The City landfill Throw 'n' Go areas or designated fire stations as part of the Household Hazardous Waste Program. Empty cleaning containers can also be brought in for safe disposal.
Landfill Throw 'n' Go areas are available when the landfills are open. The Household Hazardous Waste drop-offs are open seven days a week from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Household hazardous waste must be properly labelled and packaged:
- Leave your leftover household hazardous waste in the original container or make sure it is clearly labelled indicating the true contents.
- Your leftover household hazardous waste should be packaged securely in a sealed, spill-proof container.
