 Thermostats

Residential

Dispose of it safely

Thermostats that use a manual dial, particularly older models, may contain mercury. It is important that these are disposed of safely. Package manual thermostats in a puncture resistant, non-breakable, sealed container like a yogurt or margarine tub. Label the container as "thermostat" or "mercury", with a permanent marker and take it to one of The City landfill Throw 'n' Go areas or designated fire stations as part of the Household Hazardous Waste Program.

Modern digital thermostats (programmable with a display) do not contain mercury. They can be placed in your black cart.

NOTE: Call 911 if a thermometer, thermostat, or wall-mounted blood pressure cuff is broken and mercury is released.

Commercial

Dispose of it safely

For large commercial quantities of mercury-containing thermostats, complete an online service request or contact 311. Charges will apply.

NOTE: Call 911 if a thermometer, thermostat, or wall-mounted blood pressure cuff is broken and mercury is released.
