Freedom of information - FOIP

On November 27, 2000, City Council approved the transfer of billing services for water, sewer and solid waste (waste container rental and collection only) to ENMAX. As part of the transfer, the City will ensure ENMAX manages your personal information according to the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act.

What is FOIP?

The Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FOIP) is legislation enacted to protect your privacy rights. FOIP applies to all local governments in Alberta, including The City of Calgary.

The City's collection of your personal information is authorized by Section 33(c) of the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act S.A. 2000 C.F-/85. The use of your personal information will be in compliance with the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act.

Why do we collect information?

The City of Calgary has collected, compiled, and used your personal information to manage your utility account. ENMAX will use this information in the following ways:

  1. To identify you when you inquire about your account
  2. To initiate and maintain your utilities service at a location of your request
  3. To produce and deliver utility statements
  4. To administer account services to:
    • Determine deposit requirements, if applicable
    • Set up bank debit transactions upon your request
    • Record your water use
    • Take collection action, including referral to credit companies and collection agencies, in the event of arrears
  5. To respond to your service needs, concerns, or recommendations
  6. To tell you about additional services offered by The City of Calgary
  7. To contact alternative people in the event of an emergency
  8. To comply with legal and regulatory requirements

Please note: Other City of Calgary business units may also require access to your personal information to carry out their programs. These business units will only use the information they need to conduct their businesses. Employee access to utility accounts is limited to staff who need this information to do their jobs and who have received authorization.

The information you provide is kept and may be used for up to one year after you close your account. If you move from one location to another within Calgary and continue to be a utility customer, your information and history at the previous location remains and may be used as described above.

How to request access to your records

You have the right to look at or obtain copies of information we have on record about you. You may also ask to have any information in that record corrected if you believe there has been an error or omission. To protect your privacy, you will be asked to provide identification when requesting access to your personal information.
