Water meter installations

Possible scam alert regarding door to door water meter inspections

Customers in the Northeast have reported people posing as either ENMAX or an unknown government agency representative going door to door, asking to inspect water meters inside their homes. Please be aware that these people are not City nor ENMAX employees. This is a scam.

Appointments for water meter inspections are made beforehand with the home owners any time an ENMAX, City of Calgary water technician, or Metercor (City of Calgary representative) may need to enter the home.

If you are a customer and are unsure do not allow access to your home, and please confirm your appointment by calling either ENMAX (310-2010) or 311 immediately.

If you feel you have been involved in a situation like this, please call the Calgary Police Service at 403-266-1234 immediately.

Getting a water meter installed is simple. Both the meter and installation are free of charge. Here are the steps involved in having a meter installed.

Meter appointment
Make an appointment by calling 311. Convenient appointment times are available including evenings and Saturdays. You can also book an installation by visiting Metercor's website.

The meter will be installed by either a City of Calgary meter installer or a representative from Metercor. that has partnered with The City to install meters. Water meters are installed inside the house where the water pipe enters your home from the ground – usually in your basement. A typical meter installation takes about one hour and the meter installer will explain how to read the meter and will also check your home plumbing system for leaks.

Water shut-off valve
It would be helpful if you could find the main water shut-off valve in your basement. This valve is located on a pipe that comes out of your basement floor. It usually has a coloured round or straight handle. Please clear the area around this valve so installers have full access.

After the meter is installed

Once a meter is installed, no one has to come inside your home to read it. Water meters have a transmitter that is remotely read for billing purposes.
