Water meter installation - FAQ

Possible scam alert regarding door to door water meter inspections

Customers in the Northeast have reported people posing as either ENMAX or an unknown government agency representative going door to door, asking to inspect water meters inside their homes. Please be aware that these people are not City nor ENMAX employees. This is a scam.

Appointments for water meter inspections are made beforehand with the home owners any time an ENMAX, City of Calgary water technician, or Metercor (City of Calgary representative) may need to enter the home.

If you are a customer and are unsure do not allow access to your home, and please confirm your appointment by calling either ENMAX (310-2010) or 311 immediately.

If you feel you have been involved in a situation like this, please call the Calgary Police Service at 403-266-1234 immediately.

What does a water meter do?

Water meters measure and record the amount of water supplied to a home or business. A metered customer pays only for the water they use in addition to a basic service charge.

Am I on a flat rate or a water meter?

If you have a current utility bill, it will say whether you are on a water meter or a flat rate. Your bill will show a meter number for the meter installed in your home, as well as the monthly water consumption. If you have any questions, please contact ENMAX at 403-310-2010.

How do I arrange for an installation?

Please call 311 to arrange an appointment through The City of Calgary.

Water meters are installed by The City of Calgary or Metercor who has been contracted by the City. Please know that someone needs to be home during the installation. Please note: there is no charge for a meter installation.

Where is a water meter installed?

A water meter is installed just above the main water shut-off valve in your home. This is usually in the basement and is located on a pipe that comes out of your basement floor.

An installation takes about one hour. Locate the main water shut-off valve in your basement. This valve is located on a pipe that comes out of your basement floor. It usually has a coloured, round or straight handle. Please clear the area around this valve so installers have full access.

If the water pipe is not exposed, the installers will need to expose the pipe in order to complete the work. The installer will offer options to finish the installation.

Does the meter reader need to go inside my home?

No, once the meter is installed no one has to enter the house to read the meter. The meters have a transmitter that is remotely read for billing purposes.

Do I have to do anything to maintain the water meter?

No, you do not have to do anything to maintain your meter. The City of Calgary does have a replacement program for meters when they have been in use for a certain length of time.

For any questions or concerns regarding your ENMAX bill and water, wastewater and stormwater charges, please contact ENMAX at 310-2010.
