Mission watermain upgrade

The City of Calgary will be replacing a water main on 2 Street SW from 24 Avenue SW to 26 Avenue SW and on 24 Avenue SW from 1 Street SW to 2 Street SW. The City has chosen to replace the water mains in this area given the past history of water main breaks and age of the infrastructure. Replacement of the water mains will reduce the risk for future water main breaks and ensure adequate water flow can be maintained as the population in the area grows. North Star Contracting Inc. will be the contractor on this project.

During the replacement work, existing water mains will be replaced with larger diameter PVC pipe and valves and hydrants will be replaced and upgraded. Any sidewalks, curbs and gutters that need to be removed will be repaired to original or better condition.

Schedule

Construction is expected to take approximately 4 weeks to complete and will begin on September 24, 2018. Please note, the length of construction can vary depending on the condition of the soil, the condition of existing utilities and weather conditions.

Construction impacts

  • Regular work hours will be 7 a.m. – 7 p.m. Monday to Saturday.
  • Expect temporary street parking restrictions and temporary street closures.
  • Expect additional traffic and congestion due to construction activities and vehicles, there may be an impact to accessing parts of back lanes, driveways and parking lots.
  • There may be vibrations due to compaction.
  • Waste and recycling collections will not be disrupted.
  • Please keep children and pets away from the work area.

The contractor will be working in phases so they will be able to cover any open trenches as quickly as possible. Please note that some driveways may lose access temporarily while the contractor is working in front of them. The contractor will aim to provide temporary access to those driveways.

Water Service

It may be necessary to interrupt water service temporarily to complete portions of the work. For the majority of the duration of the construction activity, residents will be provided a temporary water supply. Should it be necessary to disrupt water service, the contractor is required to give prior notice to all affected customers at least a day in advance.

Note: Temporary water services are for providing water for domestic use only. If you have a fire protection system installed in your facility, we recommend that you notify your insurance provider that the temporary service will not provide the adequate flows for fire protection.
