Mission watermain upgrade

In response to the effects of scouring on the Elbow River during the 2013 flood event, the existing water main crossing the river adjacent to 25 Ave SW (Scollen Bridge) will be abandoned as it does not currently comply with provincial requirements. In addition to this work, a portion of the existing water main under

26 Ave SW will be upsized and a new water main is required along 2 St SW between 26 Ave SW and 25 Ave SW. This work will be completed in a phased approach.

Water service impacts

Water services for some customers will be temporarily interrupted during construction of this project though affected residents will be provided a temporary water supply during the outage and will be given prior notice by the City at least one day in advance. Please note that temporary water services are for domestic use only such as drinking, cooking and washing and will not be the same as your normal water service especially if water wagons are used which may be the case for some residences.

Construction impacts

The City of Calgary will be in the Mission neighbourhood in September 2017 to perform the first phase of this work on 26 Ave SW. Weather permitting, the second phase of work on 2 St SW and the third phase, abandonment of the river crossing may occur later this fall or will be put on hold until spring 2018. Beginning the upgrading process will position the City to preserve the safety and security of the water supply for years to come.

Please note the following:

  • Crews will be in the neighbourhood completing the first phase of work on 26 Ave SW between September 18 and September 30. Work hours are typically 6:30 a.m. - 6:30 p.m., though this may be extended to 9:30 p.m. to keep scheduled deadlines.
  • Temporary parking restrictions and street closures will be in place for phase one work on 26 Avenue S.W. and 2 Street S.W.
  • Expect additional traffic and congestion due to construction activities and vehicles. As well, there may be an impact to accessing portions of back lanes and driveways. **Please keep children and pets away from the work area**
