Sunnyside Storm Lift Station Improvements

Several storm drainage infrastructure upgrades are taking place in the community as part of the Sunnyside Community Drainage Improvement Project. Together, all of these upgrades will work towards addressing the localized flooding that occurs in the area.

The Sunnyside storm lift station improvements project will upgrade the existing storm lift station at 605 1 Avenue N.W. The work will be completed in two phases, one phase occurring in 2017 from May to July and in the fall, and the next phase beginning in early 2018, with the storm lift station fully operational by the fall 2019.

2017 project description and schedule

  • Modify existing mechanical pipe at the storm lift station.
  • Install new 375 mm stormwater drainage pipe.
  • Disconnect existing service connections, such as catch basins, from the existing stormwater drainage pipe.
  • Reconnect the service connections, such as catch basins, to the new 375 mm stormwater drainage pipe.
  • Site rehabilitation, including road, curb, sidewalk and landscaping.
  • Inserting structural pipe lining into the existing stormwater pipe using trenchless technology (fall 2017).
  • Work will be completed from May to end of July 2017, weather dependent.
  • Hours of work will be Sunday to Saturday, 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Construction impacts

  • 100 metre temporary road closure of seven consecutive days on 5A Street N.W., from 1 Avenue N.W. to Memorial Drive N.W.
  • 25 metre temporary road closure on 5A Street N.W. from 1 Avenue N.W. to Memorial Drive N.W. Anticipated at the end of May and over one to two weekends.
  • Lane reductions on Memorial Drive N.W. on weekends.
  • Partial/rotating closures of sections of 5A Street N.W., including adjacent sidewalk for a cumulative period of 24 days. This includes the following closures:
    • East access to the alley south of the lift station for two days;
    • Sidewalk on the west side of 5A Street N.W. (at addresses 701,703, 705, 707, 709, and 711) for a period of 10 days;
    • Residential driveway access for 701 and 703 5 A Street N.W. for a period of seven days to allow the concrete driveways to cure after the stormwater drainage installation.
  • Vibrations due to compacting trench material are expected.
  • Construction equipment and vehicles present.
  • Construction site will be located at the existing storm lift station and 5A Street N.W. during temporary road closures.
  • Collection service of waste and recycling may be impacted. We will work to ensure service is maintained.

The length of construction can vary depending on the location of the work, condition of the soil, the condition of existing utilities, seasonal activities, weather conditions and availability of materials.
