Return to work

Returning from Sickness and Accident (S&A) or Long Term Disability (LTD) without modifications or restrictions

In this situation, an employee has been cleared by their doctor to return to the work they were doing before they booked off.

Getting medical clearance for return

Before an employee returns to work, they need to be cleared by a doctor which will be communicated to the supervisor by either the benefits provider (Homewood Health for S&A) or by the Return to Work Coordinator (via Great West Life for LTD).

Pass along the information

For S & A

The case manager will provide notification to the supervisor and Return to Work Coordinator confirming the date the employee is able to return to work. Often the employee and supervisor have been in communication throughout the absence and the employee will update their supervisor on their return to work date in advance.

If a supervisor has any questions or concerns that the employee can’t or doesn’t address, the supervisor can contact Homewood Health.

The supervisor notifies payroll when the employee is returning so that there is no interruption in payment when it transitions from Homewood Health to the City.

For Long Term Disability

The case manager will provide notification to the employee and Return to Work Coordinator confirming the date the employee is able to return to work. Typically the employee and supervisor will have been in communication throughout the absence and the employee has provided updates on their return to work date in advance.

The Return to Work Coordinator will also confirm with the supervisor the date the employee is returning to work (without restrictions).

The supervisor notifies their applicable payroll contact when the employee is returning so that there is no interruption in payment.

Return to work plan

In cases where there are no restrictions, the return to work plan is straight forward. The Return to Work Coordinator helps with communication between The City and Great-West Life and offers support to the employee and supervisor. For the most part, the supervisor handles the transition of the employee back to the workplace.
