What is the Health System Review?


The City is commited to creating a healthy, safe and inclusive workplace. As part of that, a review of The City’s Health System was initiated in 2016 to examine and evaluate The City’s health system.

Our goal is to strengthen the corporate health system and related programs to create the best possible experience for those using it. By focusing on the entire system, The City can optimize employee well-being and improve its overall health and wellness outcomes. The health system review is well underway and is anticipated to wrap up by the end of 2018.


Here’s what we’re currently working on


Now that the information-gathering phase is complete, we are working to identify opportunities for improvement - and we have had help with this! An advisory committee comprised of representatives from internal service providers has, and continutes to provide, valuable feedback in making tangible recommendations to improve our health and wellness system.

Based on our research efforts, including conversations with employees and stakeholders, we are now in the process of:

  • identifying measures, including those in the area of leadership and employee accountability to close gaps;
  • developing a Healthy Workplace Strategy to guide direction and decision making;
  • drafting recommendations that outline governance, structure, and key program/process improvements;
  • developing accelerated accommodation strategies to maximize our organizations’ readiness for legislated changes to the WCB Policy; and,
  • examining funding models to support leadership accountability and oversight.

What’s next to support health:


Over the next few months, we’ll continue to work with with senior leaders, the advisory committee and our stakeholders to finalize recommendations. To achieve this, we will:

  • finalize our process reviews;
  • make improvements to our systems, reports and technology, examining what we currently have and focusing on where we can make a difference;
  • implement simple and easy-to-use tools and resources for employees and leaders;
  • develop short and long term sustainment and implementation plans;
  • create and present recommendations to senior leaders based on industry best practices and project findings;
  • communicate results to stakeholders and employees.
