2016 Corporate Environment, Health & Safety Annual Report

The Committee received this report for information. The Corporate Environment, Health & Safety (EHS) 2016 Annual Report is prepared by Environmental & Safety Management (ESM) in its capacity of providing governance and oversight for The City of Calgary’s Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) management systems.

The 2016 Q3 and Q4 EHS Management Systems and Compliance Report provide information on significant incidents and regulatory infractions. The report also provides a summary of EHS audit results for the same period.

Some highlights include:

  • The City developed a Climate Program in 2016, focused on building corporate leadership support and capacity, developing a Climate Resilience Plan for climate change mitigation and adaptation, and integrating and aligning with existing plans and education.
  • The ReTree YYC program was established to help Calgary’s urban forest recover from the September 2014 snow storm. In 2016, the final year of the ReTree YYC program, 9,400 trees were planted.
  • A framework was developed in 2016 for implementation of a renewed corporation-wide environmental management system, based on the revised ISO 14001:2015 international standard for environmental management.
  • In 2016, a Certificate of Recognition (COR) audit of The City’s occupational health and safety (OHS) management system was conducted and The City achieved a passing grade of 87 per cent.
