Current Economic Analysis from Corporate Economics for April 2015
• The unemployment rate in the Calgary Economic Region (CER) was 5.7 per cent in April, an increase of 0.2 percentage point from March. Meanwhile the national rate was 7.2 per cent, down from 7.4 per cent in April 2014.
• In March the number of Calgarians receiving regular employment insurance benefits jumped 16.7 per cent from the year before, landing at 12,000 persons. At the provincial level the number climbed to 38,750 persons, a 24.7 per cent annual increase.
• The Canadian Consumer Confidence Index (where 2014 = 100) plunged 13.8 points from March to 94.7 in April.
• The City of Calgary issued $598.6 million worth of building permits in April. The total value of building permits was $1.74 billion for the first four months in 2015.
