On March 12, 2014, a collision occurred in the AM peak period at the Valley Ridge Boulevard and Trans Canada interchange. The accident created lengthy delays to residents trying to exit the community. As a result, Councillor Sutherland inquired and met with the Roads Department, the Calgary Fire Department and the Calgary Police Service to discuss if emergency accesses could be opened in emergencies.
The City is working in conjunction with the Fire and Police to determine the protocol needed to warrant a situation in need of emergency exits. The Fire Department will hold discretion and the keys to open the gates for the exits. The Police Department will manage and direct traffic. Roads Department will ensure the exits are upgraded and maintained year round for emergencies. The emergency accesses are for emergency services only and not for daily residential traffic.
