Ward 1 News: Grow Calgary - Building Safety Codes Act

  • Share

Grow Calgary is a not for profit organization located on an 11 acre parcel of land just west of Canada Olympic Park. Grow Calgary produces fresh produce for the Calgary Interfaith Food Bank to ensure all Calgarians have access to fresh, local food. Councillor Sutherland recognizes the hard work of Grow Calgary volunteers and the good work they do for those in need.

In 2014, The City of Calgary receives public complaints regarding the Grow Calgary site. Bylaw officers were obligated to follow-up with an inspection. This spring, City of Calgary inspectors found three structures on Grow Calgary that did not meet safety codes. If buildings do not meet the Safety Codes Act, volunteers are put at risk. The City of Calgary cannot and will not risk the safety of any person for any reason. Therefore, The City of Calgary  put up a fence around the structures. The fence does not prevent Grow Calgary from harvesting (as previously done before the fences were enacted). The fence only stops volunteers from accessing structures deemed unsafe by qualified inspectors.
Please note that safety codes fall under provincial jurisdiction. The City is responsible and obligated to follow guidelines as outlined in the Municipal Government Act. The City must follow the law as directed by the provincial safety code and cannot for any reason, deviate from the law. City inspectors and the Province are the only qualified authorities to determine if a structure is safe or not.
Councillor Sutherland has encouraged Grow Calgary to work directly with the Province and City bylaw inspectors. Safety codes are outside of Councillor Sutherland’s scope and mandate as a city councillor. Councillor Sutherland appreciates and will continue to support Grow Calgary. He hopes that Grow Calgary can work to meet the required safety regulations and maintain a safe environment for volunteers in order to move forward.
