Property tax payment deadline June 30:
Possible mail disruption triggers reminder to property owners

CALGARY – A looming strike or lockout at Canada Post has prompted a reminder to property owners that 2016 property taxes are due Thursday, June 30.

Property owners must pay before the deadline to avoid a 7% penalty on the outstanding property taxes owing. No penalties will be waived despite the expected mail interruption.

It is strongly recommended you use another method of payment by the due date to avoid a 7% late payment penalty. Payments can typically be sent by mail, but property owners who have not yet mailed their property tax payments are encouraged to use another payment option as a strike of the Canada Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) is expected; therefore, mail delivery is not guaranteed.

Payments must be postmarked by Canada Post by June 30 to avoid penalty.

There are many ways to pay your property tax:
• major banks and financial institutions,
• through online or telephone banking,
• The City of Calgary Municipal Building, 800 Macleod Tr. S.E. Payments can be:
o Made, in person,  at The City’s cashier on the third floor from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday to Friday (cash, cheque or Interac only)
o Dropped off at The City’s “drop box” on the third floor, available 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekdays
o Placed in the 24-hour payment depository on 3rd St. S.E. in the outside wall of the Municipal Building
o Delivered by courier - 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday to Friday, at the Tax Advisory Services counter, 3rd floor, Calgary Municipal Building only.

The deadline for in-person payments at City Hall is Thursday, June 30 by 4:30 p.m.
