Bowfort Interchange – Route 407 Detour Information in Greenwood Village
The Bowfort Road and Trans-Canada Highway Interchange will be undergoing re-construction over the next two years. Starting June 29/2015, 83rd ST NW will be closed and reconstructed for the next 9-12 months, which will result in Calgary Transit detours. Transportation Infrastructure approved the shortening of Route 407, which affects the community of Greenwood/Greenbriar.
In late May, Councillor Sutherland received a call from a resident concerned with changes to transit within the community of Greenwood. He met with Calgary Transit to discuss the changes in bus routes in Greenwood Village and those who will be affected.
Calgary Transit found that 75% of the users in Greenwood will be unaffected by the temporary closures. An estimated 5% of average weekday riders coming from the far northwest stops are impacted by a longer walk of about 5 to 10 minutes. The final 20% of riders will face an increased walk of about 5 minutes or longer.
For people with reduced mobility, Councillor Sutherland is empathetic how any increase in walking distance is a barrier. Unfortunately, all-day, fixed-route transit is not the most appropriate way to solve mobility charges. As a result, Calgary Transit team has reached out to the property manager of Greenwood Village to help assist those individuals with limited mobility issues on a one-on-one basis.
Calgary Transit and Councillor Sutherland encourage those with reduced mobility to apply for Access Calgary, as they best cater to the needs of those with reduced mobility. Access Calgary is a service for Calgarians with special mobility needs with two options, regularly scheduled or on demand transportation.
