NEWS RELEASE - March 16, 2015

Due to the wind speeds last Saturday, the lift of the bridge arch was postponed until Sunday evening.  Undeterred by the snow, the lift began at 9:30 p.m. and was in place by 11:30 p.m.
The City will update the project webpage with information and post the time-lapse video.

Reminder that this weekend, the road closures for Shaganappi Trail will take place for installation of the concrete panels on the main span.  This activity is still dependent on wind speeds being below 25 km/hr.

Resolution

The delay in erection was due to two interior steel beams that required shifting to fit in place with the concrete ramps.  The modification is almost complete and construction will continue as scheduled. Area stakeholders and businesses have been notified about the upcoming lift dates and lane closures of Shaganappi Trail NW.

The City of Calgary will not be responsible for costs associated with the modification. The City will continue to work diligently with the consultant Hatch Mott Macdonald and the contractor PCL to ensure the final product is built as intended. The bridge is scheduled to be open to the public by mid-May.

NEWS RELEASE - January 2, 2015

Originally, The City of Calgary planned to close Shaganappi Trail from January 16th -18th to lift the steel span of the bridge, however, this was postponed because the steel structure did not fit onto the pillars as expected.

The contractor and consultant confirmed that there were two steel crossbeams that conflicted with the pre-constructed bridge ramps. As a result, there will be modifications required in order to ensure a correct fit to secure the installation. Until this work is completed, the second temporary closure of Shaganappi Trail will be postponed. Lifting the bridge span will be postponed until March, date to be determined. While the postponement affects the initial proposed lane closures, it does not impact the scheduled opening timeline of spring 2015

The City is working with consultants and contractors to solve these challenges. The budget project remains at $5.9 million. Stakeholders will be notified when the new lift date is scheduled, potentially in March, 2015.
