Ward 1 News: UCalgaryStrong Festival 2015

  • Share

April 15th will mark the first year since the Brentwood tragedy that saw the deaths of five young promising Calgarians. Many of those affected, such as family members, friends, and the police continue to struggle with many unanswered questions. However, this year also marks the first UCalgaryStrong Festival, an event that will provide students an alternative to Bermuda Shorts Day, an annual tradition at the University of Calgary that falls on the last day of classes.

On Wednesday, April 15th, please join me at 11:00 a.m. at the Jack Simpson Gymnasium at the University of Calgary to commemorate the five young lives lost one year ago. UCalgaryStrong is a program that aims to welcome students into the campus community, reduce loneliness, isolation and foster resiliency in the face of the stressors that are part of the post-secondary experience.

The UCalgaryStrong Festival is free to join. UCalgaryStrong festival activities include an artisan market, community care, contemplative labyrinth, zumba, yoga, geocatching and UCalgarycares BSD Day of Service. Click here for more on festival activities and scroll down the page to see the other events held by UCalgaryStrong.

Sincerely,

Ward Sutherland

Strength Wall

The Strength Wall is a community art project developed for UCalgaryStrong. It is a dynamic art piece that provides the campus community an opportunity to unite, building a unified piece of work together, piece by piece. This community building exercise celebrates the strength and resiliency of our community.

Showcase how you demonstrate strength, resiliency and support for your community. How do you define your struggles, stresses or hard times? How do you embrace and celebrate your successes, your strengths and what makes you uniquely you? Who or what (people, places, outlets) supports you? Share and express your feelings in a creative way; whether it’s through a written word, drawing or painting. Share your ideas on the leaf provided, and help the Strength Wall grow.
