Ernie Starr Arena located in Ward 10 (4808 14th Ave SE), is closed until the fall of 2013 for major facility upgrades and renovations.
The work being conducted addresses both technical and building issues as well as program issues that were hampering its ability to meet the evolving needs of current users and to better allow for the needs of anticipated future users.
The existing change rooms and support spaces will be demolished and four new change rooms, plus two auxiliary change rooms, will be constructed. These change rooms are built to contemporary size standards and will better accommodate minor hockey teams, their equipment, the coaches and parents. All new support spaces (office, lobby, and public washrooms) are also being provided as well as a community meeting room to support summer use, special programs and events.
The project will refurbish the entire ice arena bowl including the lighting, ventilation/heat, spectator seating, dasher boards, and players’ benches. The original sand floor for the ice surface is also being replaced with a modern concrete ice slab that will allow for summer use when the ice is taken out. A new ice re-surfacer (Zamboni) room and additional rink storage and field equipment storage is also being provided to allow for more flexible and efficient use of the space.
The entire building is being insulated and re-clad, resulting in what will essentially be a brand new facility for the surrounding communities. Site improvements will also be completed to create safer vehicular traffic patterns, better building access, and more attractive landscaping.
