Inspiring Strong Neighbourhoods

This spring, The City of Calgary launched a new exciting pilot project called Inspiring Strong Neighbourhoods. This community-led initiative empowered residents to identify opportunities and make recommendations to The City about municipal programs and services that directly affect their community.

Twelve neighbourhoods were selected as they provided a strong representation of the communities within our city. On March 21, representatives of the City, my assistant and I participated in a walking tour led by volunteers and residents of the Falconridge Community Association as a “grass-roots way” to gain an understanding of the neighbourhood through the eyes of those who live there. The weather for the tour was cold but spirits were high as we identified issues and strengths within their community. The tour’s findings will help influence future City programs and services for our residents.

Where we live matters to most of us. Our neighbourhoods are diverse and the people who live in them make Calgary a great city. The City of Calgary values "Strong neighbourhoods" and believes we have a critical role in building neighbourhoods where people want to live, work and play.

The Inspiring Strong Neighbourhoods was completed in June and a comprehensive report will be presented to Council later this year, outlining progress to date, lessons learned and a suggested future strategy.

This initiative is aligned with Council's priorities and is being lead by Community Services & Protective Services Department, with the Community & Neighbourhood Services business unit taking the lead. As the project progresses, Roads and Calgary Police Services will also be involved. They will also collaborate with external partners and agencies, such as Alberta Health Services.
