Al “Richie” Richardson

Armed with his own snow blower, scraper and brush, Al “Richie” Richardson is the Snow Angel for 24 homes in Calgary Marlborough. He asks for no money and often returns several times when the snow continues to fall.

Twenty years ago, Richie was battling cancer. His condition left him unable to keep his home’s drive and walkway clear of snow, until that is a Snow Angel took on the task for him. The following winter, with the cancer beaten and his strength returned, Richie decided to pay back the generous deed by paying it forward. He started shovelling snow for one neighbour and quickly took on 23 more.
Calgary Marlborough was built in the 1960s. Today many of the original residents remain, and are now seniors. Having their snow removal duties looked after allows them to stay in their homes longer than would otherwise be possible.

One of Richie’s grateful nominators is Gail Gorrie.  She describes Richie as a wonderful person with a heart of gold who’s given her immeasurable support over the years.
“Richie will come and ask if he can take the leaves out of my eaves troughs in the spring and fall. He just comes and does it and doesn’t ask for any money,” says Gail. “He doesn’t just do your sidewalk, but does the back patio and he does this all with a smile on his face and pays for his own gas for the blower.”

I’m always so inspired to hear stories about people like Richie, and it makes me proud to represent such a great area where residents are willing to go above and beyond to help their neighbours.  If you have a Snow Angel, please nominate them for recognition by the April 17, 2015 deadline.

More Snow Angels are always needed; you too can have a positive impact in your community by clearing snow from a neighbour’s property who may be elderly or physically unable to clear their own. It may be spring now, but we all know winter will be back! For more information on the Snow Angels program, visit The City of Calgary online or call 311.
