On July 22, 2014 Council voted to change playground and school zone timing. Playground zones will be in effect from 7:30 am to 9 pm year round and school zones will be in effect from 7:30 am to 9 pm on school days.
The changes made to the playground and school zone hours were not made to address speeding issues, but to make the rules for these zones more straight forward and consistent. By creating a set time for playground zones it eliminates a lot of uncertainty, as they were previously in effect until “one hour after sunset”, which varies greatly throughout the year. If there are issues with speeding in a
playground or school zone near you, please report it to the Calgary Police Service for enforcement.
Throughout the summer months, Roads will be covering existing playground and school zone
signs with decals that state the new hours. Please be aware, the Calgary Police Service will start to enforce the new playground and school zone hours on September 1, 2014.
In the future, there may be opportunities where we can convert some elementary schools from school zones to playground zones, so that they can benefit from year-round extended hours. The City will work with school boards to determine what schools would be a good fit for this change.
