2013 was an extremely busy year for the Development and Building Approvals (DBA) department. They received 86 Land Use Applications, 1108 Subdivision related applications, over 4,500 Development Permits and issued over 18,800 building permits.
Not only do they handle development related permits, but they also issue business and taxi licenses. Over the course of the year they issued 36,660 business licenses; 6,721 of them were new business licenses and 29,939 were renewals. Also, 60 new taxi license plates were added to the approximately 1,800 taxi and limousine plates that previously existed.
This business unit is focussed on customer service and safety. Last year they received approximately 133,000 calls to their call centre and met with about 58,000 people at the front counter. In an effort to improve service, they have worked hard to offer more of their services online
, and are working towards moving services like permitting, licensing and approval services online over the next several years.
