June 1-7 has been proclaimed Seniors’ Week
in the City of Calgary!
We all know how much seniors contribute to our city, whether it’s by volunteering their time, mentoring youth, or nurturing their families. As a way to celebrate all these contributions made by our elder citizens, the City and other local organizations are providing a number of extra benefits and events this week. I’ve highlighted those in our ward, and picked a few others that looked really interesting!June 1-7Fort Calgary
is offering free admission for the whole week for any senior 65+, so come down and see where the city started, and then maybe take a quick stroll and look at downtown to see how far we’ve come!
Join the City of Calgary Seniors’ Activity Challenge
! Pick up an activity book at the Glenmore Aquatic Centre
and see if you get the recommended 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity each week. There’s a reception with refreshments and door prizes on Thursday June 11 from 12-1pm to celebrate your achievements!
The Seniors for Seniors Adoption Program
gives you a 60% discount if you’re over the age of 60 and adopt an animal over the age of 7! The City of Calgary Animal Services
will make sure the animal is spayed/neutered and vaccinated, and send you home with some food as well! June 1
At the Southland Leisure Centre
between 3:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m, Lisa will lead a free, short session on wally ball
, a fun and senior-safe version of volleyball. Ages 50+.June 2
Free admission at the Glenbow Museum
all day! There are some great exhibits on right now, including Hooked: Fish, Water and Angling in Art
- about the art and culture of fishing, and another about political satire in Alberta
. They are also offering a discount on seniors' memberships all week, including renewals.
The Kerby Centre
will be hosting performances and activities
from 12-2pm, and serving BBQ beef on a bun for only $2! Why not stop by for lunch before or after going to the museum?June 3

Ever thought about learning tai chi? The Calgary Chinese Elderly Citizens’ Association
will show you that and many other tips for aging well at its Senior Wellness Day from 10-3pm.
This is really interesting, and could be great for those who love to spend time at the Glenmore Reservoir - Birding by Sound course at Ralph Klein Park! It starts at 7:30am to take advantage of early birds of the feathered variety. You do have to register so call 403-268-3800

The City of Calgary is also in the process of developing a Seniors' Age-Friendly Strategy
along the guidelines of the World Health Organization’s “Age-friendly Cities” framework.
By 2036, it’s estimated that nearly one in five Calgarians will be over the age of 65 so it’s important that we build a city with seniors in mind. This made-in-Calgary strategy will be presented to City Council later in June.
