A Little Free Library is a “take a book, return a book” free book exchange. In its most basic form, it’s a wooden box of books where anyone may pick up a book or two, or bring a book to share. If this were just about providing free books on a shelf, the whole idea might disappear after a few months.
Little Free Library book exchanges have a unique, personal touch and there is an understanding that real people are sharing their favorite books with their community. These aren’t just any old books, this is a carefully curated collection. The Library itself is a piece of neighborhood art that acts like a mini-town square.
The mission of these Little Free Librairies is to promote literacy and the love of reading by building free book exchanges worldwide and to build a sense of community as we share skills, creativity and wisdom across generations.
If you are interested in building a Little Free Library connect with your Community Association (CA). Your CA will be able to reach out to their Neighbourhood Partnership Coordinator who will guide you and your CA through the steps for installing one - from start to finish.
CAs can commission libraries to be built, or build libraries themselves. For inspiration, a great website to check out is the Little Free Library Organization.
