On November 4, City Council approved an amendment to the Waste and Recycling Bylaw. Under this amendment, multi-family housing (condos, townhouses, apartments, mobile home parks or any other complex with five or more units on a single parcel of land) are required to provide on-site recycling for a specific list of materials by February 1, 2016.

There is no one-size-fits-all solution for multi-family recycling. Every building and complex is different, so it requires flexibility and choice, which the private sector is best able to provide. Private recyclers will provide collection and processing. The City of Calgary will provide communication, education and monitor compliance.

Waste & Recycling Services has launched a web update that will help you understand what residents, building owners and managers, and private recyclers roles are going forward. The website also has education resources that can help with the transition to providing a recycling program.
