NeighbourWoods has been expanded
The City of Calgary’s NeighbourWoods program has been expanded and includes three neighbourhoods in Ward 11 – Altadore, Elbow Park, and Windsor Park!
If you’re not familiar with the program, The City of Calgary provides trees to designated Residential Tree Stewards. These fine, upstanding citizens find a public place in their neighbourhood, on City property, that could use some extra greenery and work with the City to decide which type of tree would be best suited – and there are a lot of options!
After a 45 minute training session to help green your thumb, you can take your tree and plant it (again with City assistance, no one will leave you high and dry!) and then assume responsibility for watering and checking for pests. The City will still take care of the heavy work of pruning and maintenance, they just ask that the Stewards help keep an eye out for pests or problems and call them in to 311 if needed.
For a nominal fee of $30 you get the educational course, a prepped site for your tree, the tree itself which you get to put in the ground, and a treegator watering bag (not this kind!) to help you keep the new tree watered for the first 5 years. And best of all, the satisfaction of knowing that you have a direct impact on increasing our urban forest and beautifying your neighbourhood!
Sign up now and someone will get back to you about starting your Stewardship! I think it would also be a fun project to take on as a family to teach the little ones the importance of both nature and taking care of your community.
