Ward 11 Brian's Beat: Notice of Motion to bring Gender Neutral Washroom Signage

  • Share

Ward 11 official website

Washrooms have traditionally been built to accommodate two genders and the signs that accompany them project the notion that a person should fit into one of only two genders. For many Calgarians this is not the case and washrooms are often spaces of harassment and potential violence. For transgender, gender-fluid, gender-queer individuals these negative experience can cause withdrawal from and avoidance of public spaces.
On Monday, July 25th, my Notice of Motion on gender neutral washrooms passed. Now, The City of Calgary will simply re-label existing single occupancy washrooms in all city buildings making them gender neutral. Multi-stall washrooms will remain unchanged. The cost associated with this change is negligible as it only consists of new signage.
The City of Calgary prides itself on being inclusive for all Calgarians which also includes the LGBTQ community. The City strives to build public spaces for all Calgarians to enjoy and this is a very simple change that is an important first step in increasing inclusivity for LGBTQ individuals.
The City has also been directed that going forward any new builds or retrofits of City buildings will include gender neutral washrooms. This Notice of Motion also benefits differently able individuals, families and breastfeeding mothers, those with medical issues, or those who would prefer a little more privacy.
