Washrooms have traditionally been built to accommodate two
genders and the signs that accompany them project the notion that a person
should fit into one of only two genders. For many Calgarians this is not the
case and washrooms are often spaces of harassment and potential violence. For
transgender, gender-fluid, gender-queer individuals these negative experience
can cause withdrawal from and avoidance of public spaces.
On Monday, July 25th, my Notice
of Motion on gender neutral washrooms passed. Now, The City of Calgary will
simply re-label existing single occupancy washrooms in all city buildings
making them gender neutral. Multi-stall washrooms will remain unchanged. The
cost associated with this change is negligible as it only consists of new
The City of Calgary prides itself on being inclusive for all
Calgarians which also includes the LGBTQ community. The City strives to build
public spaces for all Calgarians to enjoy and this is a very simple change that
is an important first step in increasing inclusivity for LGBTQ individuals.
The City has also been directed that going forward any new
builds or retrofits of City buildings will include gender neutral washrooms.
This Notice of Motion also benefits differently able individuals, families and
breastfeeding mothers, those with medical issues, or those who would prefer a
little more privacy.
