Ward 11 News: Water Main Replacement on Horton Road SW

Due to the cold weather and other reasons, the water main replacement project on Horton Road is postponed. The work will likely take place in 2017.

Apologies for any confusion caused by multiple notices. The City and our office will be sure to let area residents know well in advance with impacts and construction timing for when the project does move ahead.

The City of Calgary takes a proactive approach to reduce emergency water main breaks, and performs inspections regularly to identify areas for replacement to mitigate future breaks.

As part of the Water Main Replacement Program, The City has identified th need to replace a water main on Horton Road SW from 9508 Horton Road SW to 9705 Horton Road SW.

Construction is expected to take approximately three weeks to complete, beginning November 14. The length of construction may vary depending on the condition of the soil, the condition of existing utilities, availability of materials and weather conditions. 

During the replacement work, existing cast iron water mains will be replaced with new PVC pipes. In addition, adjacent valving and hydrants will be replaced and upgraded. This location was identified for replacement due to analysis indicating the risks of future main breaks and to ensure adequate water flows are provided for future populations. The contractor will be moving in a progressive fashion to cover any open trenches as quickly as possible. 

Please note that some parking entrances will lose access temporarily while the contractor is in front of these locations. The contractor will provide temporary access (fill) and move as quickly as possible to accommodate the impacted businesses. Residents will be notified to move their vehicles to prevent any temporary blockages.

Please also note that it may be necessary to interrupt water service temporarily to complete portions of the work. For the majority of the duration of the construction activity, residents will be provided a temporary water supply. Should water interruptions take more than an hour, the contractor will notify all customers affected.
