Noise at the Spyhill Landfill

  • Share

Over the past few months, there have been numerous complaints in regards to the sounds coming from areas around the Spyhill Landfill. I have looked into these complaints and found that air cannons are being used to scare away ravens at night, which is necessary for workers safety. Calgary Community Standards (Bylaw Services) has conducted sound tests which confirm that the sounds average 47 decibels, which are permissible as per the Community Standards Bylaw. These sounds should not be confused with the explosions heard on the evening of April 8th. Two explosions were conducted by The Calgary Police Service at 10:00 p.m. and 10:15 p.m. During these times, an explosive device was detonated for public safety purposes. The Calgary Police Service has informed me that they will work to avoid night time explosions unless there is an operational urgency in order to ensure public safety. Going forward, I have requested that the Calgary Police Service, Calgary Community Standards and my office hold a town hall meeting with community residents to further discuss these matters. More details of this open house will follow.

Thank you for your patience and understanding.
