The McKnight Widening and Reconstruction project had a successful first construction season, adding two new lanes in the median between 12 and 19 Streets N.E. These new lanes are not yet operational and will remain barricaded until construction starts in 2016.
For safety reasons, traffic speed has been reduced from 70 to 50 km/h and will remain at 50 km/h over the winter. There is a large grade discrepancy between the old and the new road, and the barriers blocking access to the new lanes are very close to the driving lanes. The traffic speed will also be reduced to 50 km/h during the construction season in 2016.
In 2016, construction will begin with work on the intersections at 12 and 19 Streets N.E., probably in February/March, dependent on the weather. Then the old road bed will be removed and reconstructed. The new lanes in the median will be used as traffic lanes during construction as traffic is shifted from one side of the road to the other to facilitate reconstruction.
More information will be provided about construction details in early 2016. All construction should be complete by the end of construction season in 2016.
