On July 22, 2014 City Council approved changes to playground and school zone timing in Calgary. The changes are:
- Playground zones will be in effect from 7:30 a.m. to 9 p.m., all year around.
- School zones will also be in effect from 7:30 a.m. to 9 p.m., on school days.
Creating consistent times for playground and school zone hours will improve safety for both pedestrians and motorists. It will help to eliminate confusion over the end time of “one hour after sunset” for playground zones as well as provide longer times for schools with playgrounds as many school sites are used after school hours.
These new times are now in effect although the Calgary Police Service will not begin enforcing the new times until September 1, 2014. Until that time the CPS will focus on educating Calgarians about the changes.
The City of Calgary is also working with the various school boards to combine school and playground zones into one zone if appropriate.
