Re: DURING TOUGH ECONOMIC TIMES CITY COUNCIL SHOULD LEAD BY EXAMPLE
Last night City Council voted 13-1 in favour of approving a 8.5% bonus for our City Manager. I took a stand and voted against this bonus. My decision is by no means a reflection on the job Mr. Fielding has done over the last year. In fact, I applaud his efforts in trying to bring efficiency and accountability back to City Hall. Mr. Fielding is an ally to Calgarians who want to see real change.
However, given the current economic down turn, I believe it is high time that City Council starts making some tough decisions. As a Council we need to stop doing what is easy and instead focus on what is right. We have an opportunity to lead by example. While tens of thousands of Calgarians are facing wage roll backs and layoffs Council should be demonstrating fiscal restraint.
I concede that some of the economic factors we are facing are out of our control. But in my opinion Council still has the ability to engage in fiscal belt tightening as required. And, right now, it is required.
Over the next couple of years I will be bringing forward new ideas on how the City can further bring its fiscal house in order – ideas that are long overdue.
If you agree with me that, especially during these tough economic times, Council needs to show more economic restraint then let me know. I will continue to champion and advocate for fiscal responsibility. You can contact me at email@example.com. I look forward to hearing from you on this very important matter.
